Abstract：The outbreak of the “castration”scandal in Northern Chinain 1950was apparently triggered by a signing campaign，but ，as thisauthor tries to show，it could actually be traced to the uneasy collectivememory of the folks.Before its outbreak，the scandal had been fermentedin the whisperings of the folk mass.
